Quote #1: "They bombed Nairobi! And Dar es Salaam"
Chapter 23 page 438 paragraph 7

For this quote I will tie it into the question, why has the main character come to America. Well I think that the answer to this question is because Africa is unsafe. The reason he went to Ethiopia was the same, because he wanted to escape the war, but Ethiopia was no different. In this quote it says that they bombed somewhere close to them, which is one example why it is not safe. The reason that it is dangerous is the sudanese government, who nearly every sudanese person hates. So in my opinion Valentino, or Dominic, or Achak came to America for A life that was not constantly threatened by the government.

For this quote I will do a character judgement, and I will judge tabitha. I actually don't like her that much as a character, and it is because she is alittle bit too dramatic, but she was having a good relationship with Valentino. So it was surprising to learn that she had been murdered and quite sad, mainly for Valentino. Because they were so in love.

Question: If you were living in a dangerous place, would you walk that far to go to safety, or try to endure it.

Quote #2: "I was refereing a soccer game when a UN truck drove by...."
Chapter 23 page 440 Paragraph 2

For this quote I will answer the question, What was the life/role of the characters in their home country? At first he was a child at the camp but once he was old enough he became a teacher. He started a pen pal project where the kids in his class wrote to kids in Japan, and traded info. Sometimes the kids of japan would come visit, and one of the teachers stayed. His name was Noryaki, and he was super nice and helped people in the camp. Valentino ( Dominic) and Noryaki got pretty close and saw each other alot, and talked about their girlfriends.

I can connect to this one, because it is something that we are doing in school. We ourselves did a pen pal project, in spanish, where we wrote in spanish, and the kids in Tijuana wrote in english. It was the same as in the book because we don't speak spanish as a first language, just like they don't speak english as a first language.

Question: Why do you think Noryaki doesn't want to go back to Japan, and see his girlfriend?
